ICE RINK RENTAL
Turnkey real-ice rink rental for seasonal projects and events
SPORTWAVE provides seasonal and temporary real-ice rink rental in Lithuania and Latvia, combining site assessment, AST ice technology, refrigeration, boards, operating equipment, installation, commissioning, operator preparation, technical support and dismantling.
This page helps decide whether rental is the right commercial model and what the project must define. For the detailed delivery sequence, commissioning scope and responsibility workflow, see Turnkey Ice Rink Rental Service.
When rental is usually the stronger model
| Project situation | Typical direction |
|---|---|
| First seasonal rink / demand not yet proven | Rental reduces long-term asset commitment. |
| Christmas market or city-centre attraction | Turnkey rental simplifies seasonal logistics. |
| One-off event | Rental is normally more practical than purchasing a complete system. |
| Site or geometry may change next year | Rental preserves flexibility. |
| No storage or specialist installation crew | Rental keeps more lifecycle responsibility with the technical provider. |
| Same rink returns for many years with storage and trained staff | Purchase or a hybrid model deserves evaluation. |
Rink size should follow peak use
For early-stage recreational planning, ASHRAE gives approximately 2.3–2.8 m² of ice per person actually skating. A 15 × 30 m rink provides 450 m², corresponding to roughly 160–195 active skaters as a preliminary planning check.
This is not a legal occupancy limit. Visitor flow, skill level, session policy, supervision, gates and operating equipment still have to be assessed separately.
The ice area is only part of the required site
A seasonal rink also needs space for boards and gates, visitor entry/exit, rubber flooring, skate rental, benches, resurfacer access, refrigeration equipment, pipe routes, technical service, snow handling, water, drainage and safe electrical distribution.
This is why final ice dimensions should be fixed only after the complete site footprint has been checked.
AST mobile technology supports different seasonal formats
| Technology | Best fit |
|---|---|
| Conventional EPDM mat field | Flexible seasonal rectangles and custom rink shapes. |
| AST IceBox | Recurring seasonal installations where storage and faster handling are important. |
| AST SkateWay® | Paths, curves and connected ice areas rather than one open rectangle. |
IceBox uses a standard 2.5 m width; 20 / 30 / 40 m mat lengths provide approximately 50 / 75 / 100 m² per module. SkateWay® uses connection widths of 0.5 / 1.0 / 2.5 m with 10 / 20 / 30 m mat lengths.

The exact package is project-specific. See the full Turnkey Ice Rink Rental service workflow.
Refrigeration, power and plant location are the main early technical checks
Outdoor seasonal ice is affected by air temperature, solar radiation, wind, rain, humidity, operating hours and resurfacing frequency. Refrigeration therefore has to be calculated from the actual site rather than one generic kW/m² rule.
Before final equipment selection, confirm the available electrical capacity, connection point, possible refrigeration-equipment location, airflow, noise restrictions, hydraulic distance and service access.
Board selection follows the users
Public-skating projects typically prioritise visibility, appearance and easy visitor access. Hockey and professional use require a different impact and safety concept. Gate positions must also work with resurfacing, emergency access and visitor circulation.
Skates and resurfacing are capacity equipment
The rink can only operate as well as its visitor and maintenance system. Skate fleet quantity follows simultaneous users, size distribution, turnover and reserve stock. Resurfacing equipment follows rink area, gate width, daily cycles, turnaround time and snow/water capacity.
Turnkey rental still needs a clear responsibility split
Depending on the contract, the organiser may still provide the approved site, electrical connection, water and drainage, permits, security, ticketing, local staffing, snow-disposal area and access for installation and service. These interfaces should be fixed in the proposal before mobilisation.
Energy optimisation still matters on a temporary rink
AST EasyCHILL can provide monitoring and demand-based control on suitable systems. AST communicates reductions of up to 60% in chiller runtime / energy consumption in suitable applications. This is a manufacturer maximum and not a guaranteed saving for every project.
